Peacocks & Pinstripes
The gallery launches a dazzling new photographic exhibition named Peacocks and Pinstripes – a snapshot of masculine style, featuring such dapper dandies as Roger Moore and Noel Coward, as well as iconic modern heroes like David Beckham.
Peacocks and Pinstripes was developed by the Getty Images Gallery in collaboration with the Fashion and Textile Museum. The exhibition focuses on the world of men’s fashion and includes an impressive series of iconic images depicting the styles and trends of the past 70 years, including the “Sexy Scot” image of Sean Connery lounging on the sofa with a cigarette and the “Bobby Socks” image of England footballer, Bobby Moore, modelling clothes by Sir Hardy Amies.
Getty Images Gallery Director, Louise Garczewska comments: “We are delighted to be showcasing this incredible collection of images in the heart of London. It beautifully portrays the male image in fashion and photography, as well as the role of celebrity in fashion - who was wearing what, where and when.”
On writing the foreword to the exhibition, style writer James Sherwood, author of The London Cut said, “For the lion's share of the 20th century, the male role in fashion photography was that of an immaculate but unobtrusive accessory. Peacocks & Pinstripes is not a retrospective of the male body reflected in the mirror of fashion magazines. Instead, the exhibition celebrates icons of male elegance captured by the great portrait and artist photographers.”
