John Kobal Foundation Archive

John Kobal was a renowned authority on cinema and Hollywood portrait photography. The author of over thirty film and photography related books including 'The Art of The Great Hollywood Portrait Photographers’ and 'People Will Talk', he also curated many exhibitions on the work of the major Hollywood portrait photographers at museums world wide including the Museum of Modern Art, New York; the National Portrait Gallery, Washington D.C.; the Victoria & Albert Museum and National Portrait Gallery, London.

John Kobal created the John Kobal Foundation Archive himself over a number of years. He was a great collector of movie imagery, memorabilia and related ephemera and this collection, which consists of an estimated 20,000 original 10x8 negatives, represents his own personal ‘Hollywood’ archive.

On his death, John donated this extraordinary collection to the foundation which he had established as a registered charity in 1991. The foundation encourages not only emerging photographers but also new concepts and technical developments in portrait photography. It achieves this through the grant of discretionary awards to photographers and/or photographic galleries or organisations to help towards the costs of undertaking photographic projects, mounting exhibitions and research.

The Getty Images Gallery is proud to be able to offer fine art prints of a selection of images from this outstanding collection.
